Spiel is an in situ performance for prepared mouth.
While conversing in a room, someone walks towards you. The stranger comes closer, leans in, and listens. The mysterious device affixed to their face brings a halt to the conversation. All eyes turn towards the visitor. The mouth opens, patterns of rhythm and sound emanate from within: voices perceived as your own.
In Spiel, a performer wanders through space, collecting conversations into memory. Vocal exchanges are recalled and reflected. Gathered voices are transformed by physical formant inflections, allowing the performer’s mechanically augmented vocal tract to reshape and filter conversational spectra into new modes of communication.
